I Left a Job I Loved. And I Took Myself With Me.

I write a lot about doing hard things.
Not because I think we should be able to handle everything without it affecting us, but because small approaches can help us move through hard things with purpose instead of resentment and burnout.
Resilience is something we build. The little things we practice every day- taking a breath before reacting, reframing a situation, noticing what is still good, giving ourselves a moment to pause- start to add up. Eventually, they lead to an identity shift and the grounded belief that even when something is hard, we can handle it.
And this sense of calm confidence then carries into the other parts of our lives.
This week I did a really hard thing. I left a job that I loved, a job that I have been in for 26 years and that has made me into the pain management NP that I am.

I didn’t leave angry. I am heartbroken over leaving the colleagues that have stood by me for all these years. And yet, I decided to leave.
I left for my own growth- to bet on myself, to push myself to new levels.
I left to help build something new.
It might sound risky, but this is the beauty of resilience. I’m not worried. I am bringing myself with me… and I know, for sure, that I can handle anything. Not because I’m perfect, but because I have the tools I need, and the experience to reassure me that these tools work.
This new job will have all the ups and downs of any job. I know I can give great care no matter what.
What would you do if you weren’t worried about your ability to handle hard things? If you could anticipate an amazing return on investing in yourself? Would you lead a new initiative or learn a new specialty? Would you deep dive into a passion project?
Remember, you get to bring yourself with you,
and when you invest in yourself, the return is guaranteed.
