Reclaiming your happiness at work: Thriving as a nurse in 2024 and beyond
Many nurses are struggling with the day to day pain of nursing. This can be disheartening as nurses begin to ask themselves “how much longer can I do this”? The first step to thriving at work is healing. This starts with gaining an understanding of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue in nursing. With this awareness we can then move to identifying the strengths of nurses and expanding their use from patient care to self-care. From this place, strategies to minimize the pain of nursing and buld resilience can be learned. The steps are simple, we just need to know where to start. Nurses WANT to love the work they do. If this can be achieved, the return on investment in improved patient care AND improved health and wellness of the nurse is transformational.

Nurses as the patient and burnout as the condition: caring for ourselves to improve patient care
Thirty one percent of nurses report leaving their jobs due to burnout and greater than 60% of nurses report some symptoms of burnout. While these pre-pandemic numbers are staggering, nurse stressors have only increased over since COVID-19. While burnout can result in a lower level of patient care and can impact the mental health and wellness of the individual nurse, it is not untreatable or unavoidable. It should be treated like the chronic health conditions that we diagnose and treat with our patients on a daily basis. One key approach to combating burnout and compassion fatigue is to build resilience, increasing the ability to adapt successfully in the face of stressful or threatening situations. By building resilience through the strategies outlined, we, as NPs, can give ourselves some of the amazing health care we give our patients and stay in the profession that we worked so hard to get into.

Secondary Trauma in Nursing: the problem we didn’t know we have
Nursing is arguably a very difficult job. In addition to high requirements of knowledge and advanced skills, nurses are expected to be able to deal with patient stressors and distressing outcomes on a regular basis. This puts nurses at high risk for developing secondary traumatic stress which can lead to compassion fatigue, burnout, and illness. The first step to protecting nurses and facilitating healing is awareness of this possibility for vicarious trauma and acknowledging that a baseline trauma history may be present. This presentation looks at defining this problem in nursing, addressing the accompanying moral distress and establishing a treatment protocol for trauma informed self care.

Nurse Suicide: Silent but Deadly
Research shows that nurses have an 18% higher incidence of suicide than patients in the general population and female nurses have almost 2x the incidence of suicide as women in the general population. This is not being addressed in nursing education or at the larger organizational level. This activity will provide nurses with the necessary information to identify the risk factors for nurse suicide, support those who are at risk, and develop a care plan to promote their own health and wellness as nurses.

This straightforward presentation outlines 5 steps that your staff can start using today to make the daily experience of life at work better and build the strength of the team.
